Providence Power Station at Night

Night Photography of the Manchester Street Power Station in Providence

Rhode Island has many great landmarks that make great subjects for photography. Landmarks such as the State House, the Newport Bridge, the Big Blue Bug, the the Providence River Bridge, and the Manchester Street Power Station are all instantly recognizable to anyone who has spent time in Rhode Island.

Night Photograph of the Manchester Street Power Station

The Manchester Street Power Station is a natural gas power station that sits on the Providence River at the top of Narragansett Bay, immeditaly next to the I-195 Highway. With its three smokestacks jutting up into the Providence skyline with their distinctive red lights, the power station is a landmark for all Rhode Islanders as they traverse the state. It is a beacon that folks all over can instantly recognize on the horizon.

I have a great love for night photography, and find that the city of Providence provides a never ending supply of subjects. On this night I was drawn in by the colors of the lights on the power plant, and how the reds, yellows and oranges played nicely with the blues in the sky after the sun had set. A slight hint of pink on the horizon on the right side of the photograph gives just enough of a hint as to the time of day.

The city and the buildings in it come to life at night, and take on personalities of their own. At night the colors become richer, as the bright lights glow in stark contrast to the dark shadows, creating a hint of mystery. It is these feeling that I try to capture in my work, and to share with you in my photography.

Prints of the photograph of the Manchester Street Power Station are available for purchase in the fine art print gallery.
