The Superman Building in Providence

The “Superman Building” in Providence Goes Dark at Night

Today the “Superman Building” in Providence went dark, and it is going to change my night photography. Located at 111 Westminster Street, the Superman Building got its nickname due to its striking resemblance to The Daily Planet Building in the Superman comic books.

The Superman Building is the tallest building in Rhode Island, and since 1927 has been a dominant feature of the Providence skyline. It is dark, as its last tenant has vacated the building, and it now stands empty for the time being.

Full Moon Over Providence – Waterplace Park Providence Rhode Island

I love to do night photography, and find that the skyline of Providence makes for a great subject. Bright, vibrant colors light up the city, and bring it to life in a way that daylight just cannot do. I often composed my photographs to include the Art Deco inspired Superman Building, as it is a building full of character and easily identifiable to Rhode Island residents.

I’ll miss the seeing the Superman Building lighting up the Providence skyline, and eagerly await for the night that they turn the lights back on. But in the meantime, I will have to settle for looking at the photographs that I have created in the past. In the photograph on this post the Superman Building is in the center, with the moon to its left as you look at the photo. You can purchase a high quality print of this photograph, as well as many others, in my fine art print gallery.
