20 Beautiful Examples of New England Seascape Photography

Sharing The Approach to Creating My Seascape Art

I was very flattered last summer when I was asked to do an educational presentation on my Seascape Photography to a local photography organization. Now when it comes to photography, I can talk. I am very passionate about my art, and I could talk about it for hours, maybe even days on end. Just ask my wife, she will tell you all about it! But seriously, I was honored to be asked, and I really enjoy sharing what I know and helping others with their photography, so I immediately said yes!

Point Judith Light at Dawn

The Photographic Society of Rhode Island is a local photography club that I have been a very active member of for the past several years. PSRI is the largest and oldest photography organization in the state of Rhode Island, with over 150 active members and a very busy calendar. Weekly meetings of all kinds are held – competitions, inspirational programs and learning programs are all very popular, as well as hands on sessions and mentoring nights. It is a great club full of amazing, and talented photographers. I had the privileged of serving as the organizations president last year, and was humbled when I was asked to give a presentation on how I create my artistic seascape photographs.

I was nervous at first, as the folks that I was presenting to are all excellent photographers with years of experience. Photographers that I admire and respect, and the idea of teaching them was more then a little intimidating. However, after taking a big deep breath I got started and fell into a nice groove and really enjoyed the session. It is really thrilling to be able to share what you love and are passionate about, and to see a crowd of faces looking back at you with that same enthusiasm!

The presentation consisted of a talk on everything that I do for a shoot – from planning the trip, to choosing where to set up the camera and why. I talked a bit about the tools that I use to help me plan like Google Earth and the Photographer Ephemeris. I spent a good deal of time on how safety is so important when along the shore. Never turn your back on the ocean – it is beautiful, but it is powerful and in the blink of an eye can take you and your gear out to sea!  Having the right tools, like a good solid tripod, a cable release and a set of filters. Knowing the controls on your camera and how to change them in the pitch dark before the sun rises for the day.

However the important part of the presentation was not the technical settings for a photograph, but what my thought process was when I was creating that photograph. The key theme of the talk was not the “f/16 at 1/250th” to make this photograph, but rather what I saw in the scene before me, and what moved me to create! What was I trying to say in this photograph? How do I feel, and what in the scene causes that feeling? That is what will dictate the camera settings. That vision is what will drive the photograph.

The settings are just settings, and the camera is just a tool that helps you to achieve your vision. But you must have that vision before you even put your hands on the camera.

The Seascape Video

As part of the presentation, I put together a video that featured some of my favorite seascapes, set to a little music. The idea was to showcase the types of photographs that I create using my approach. The original video contained closer to 50 photographs and was over 4 minutes long, which I felt was a little too much to share online. I have trimmed back the video a bit, reducing it to  20 beautiful examples of New England seascape photography. I would like to share the updated video with all of you!  It is under 2 minutes long, and shows you just how beautiful the New England coastline can be!

I really hope that you enjoyed the video! This was a lot of fun to create and I am toying with the idea of doing more videos! Perhaps a short video that showcases my landscapes, night photography, portraits, and still life photography? Please let me know what you think in the comments below as I would really like to hear your opinions! And if you really liked it share it with your friends!

Mike, I really enjoyed the presentation you gave at PSRI that night. I am a new-ish member (fall 2013), and your presentation was really enjoyable and educational. That is definitely the sort of thing I was hoping for/expecting when I joined, so thank you.

Thank you Mike. I’d love to get feedback on my photos posted on flickr if you have the time. I don’t have many up there yet and they are private to the public but you should be able to access them. http://www.flickr.com/photos/112034164@N07/
