Love on the Rocks: A Story Behind the Image

“Love on the rocks, ain’t no surprise…”

The first time I saw this photo on my camera screen, Neil Diamond’s voice popped in my head. My dad used to spin that record all the time, and that song’s iconic opening is forever stitched into my memory. Funny how a single image can stir up the soundtrack of your life.

Expectations vs. Reality

When I first heard about Sculptured Rocks Natural Area in New Hampshire, I had big expectations. I pictured rushing water tumbling over waterfalls, endless compositions waiting to be captured. Except when I got there… no waterfalls. Well, not exactly none. But let’s just say the trickle I found wasn’t going to land me on the cover of National Geographic. Disappointed? Absolutely.

Adapting to What’s in Front of You

But here’s the thing: life rarely goes according to plan. We map it out, the gods laugh, and then reality rolls in. The question is—do we sulk, or do we adapt?

That day, I had already made the long drive. The light was perfect (at least, nature-landscape-photographer-perfect—meaning cloudy and overcast). And I was standing in the woods with all my gear, no waterfalls in sight. So I did what photographers—and frankly, humans—have to do: I looked around again. And then again.

Finding the Keeper

Hours later, I noticed a rock at the bottom of what should have been a rushing river. Fallen leaves framed it like a quiet offering. I set up my tripod, adjusted my settings, and worked the scene. Thirty minutes passed as I moved an inch this way, a nudge that way. Finally, the image came together. On my screen, it lit up like a gift. My keeper of the day.

That moment reminded me of something bigger than photography: sometimes the beauty isn’t in what you planned to find, but in what’s right in front of you.

Photography as Mindfulness

Photography has always been my version of mindfulness—even before I knew the word. It pulls me into the present, away from regrets of yesterday or worries about tomorrow. Through the lens, I fall into the now. And sometimes, the “keeper” isn’t the photo itself—it’s the lesson.

Finding Beauty in the Unexpected

We don’t always get waterfalls. Sometimes, we get rocks, leaves, and soft light instead. And maybe that’s exactly what we needed.

A Statement Piece for Your Space

I love printing this photo myself. Most of the time, I choose a quality semi-gloss paper, which usually works perfectly. But this image calls for something different. For me, it belongs on a matte paper — something with texture, a surface that feels almost like it has its own story to tell.

Matte paper softens the light and adds a subtle depth to the scene. It’s less reflective, more intimate, and it pulls you into the quiet mood of the woods. There’s something about the weight and texture of a matte print that feels timeless. Holding it in my hands is always a treat — one I never get tired of.
