Fine Art Still Life Photography and a lot of Chocolate

One of my favorite things to do is to create fine art still life photography. Finding a great subject, settling on a lighting scheme, and then setting it all up. I can literally spend hours making minor adjustments to the scene, the lighting, and the composition of the photograph. A minor change here or there, I keep adjusting until I have created the photograph I had in mind.

This week my theme was chocolate, and I was on the hunt to find a something good to photograph! I carefully browsed the display cases at Le Favorite Bakery, a local bakery known for their sinfully delightful confectionery creations. My heart skipped a beat when I saw this beautiful cake sitting innocently behind the glass of the display case. At that moment I knew that I had found my subject, a cake notoriously known as “Death by Chocolate”. It met all of my requirements – chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate! Chocolate fudge, chocolate icing, chocolate candy.

In my minds eye I could see the photograph developing already. A dark, moody image with a hint of mystery. After all, a cake with a name like “Death by Chocolate” has a reputation to protect. For this photograph I wanted the chocolate cake to appear as if it was coming out of a dark alley.

Death By Chocolate

One great benefit of about photographing a chocolate cake is that once you are done with the photography, you have a really delicious cake to eat! I poured myself a big glass of milk and cut myself a big piece.

I hope you have enjoyed meeting Death by Chocolate. You can see more photographs like this in my fine art still life photography gallery!
