The Soft Colors of Sunrise at Whale Rock at Narragansett Beach in Rhode Island
On a recent chilly morning I brewed a cup of coffee, loaded up my gear and headed down to one of my favorite beaches to add to my Rhode Island seascape photography collection. Narragansett Beach in Rhode Island is one of my favorite spots, as it has a lot of memories for me. Back in my high school days this was the popular beach where all the kids hung out, and I spent more summer days laying on the sand than I can even begin to count.
Seascape Photography – Sunrise at Whale Rock
I use a wide angle lens to create the majority of my photographs, as I love to capture giant, sweeping photographs. However on this morning the sky was full of grey, and the clouds were not even very interesting. Right on the horizon, there was a beautiful band of pink, right over Whale Rock.
Interestingly Whale Rock is actually the smallest island in Narragansett Bay and was home to the Whale Rock Lighthouse built in 1882. However the lighthouse was destroyed in the Hurricane of 1938
I changed to a longer lens, zoomed and placed the small island in a pleasing location. I liked the first few shots, but wanted to change a few things. I lowered my tripod so that I could include a little of the beaches edge, and stopped down my aperture and increased my shutter speed. The longer shutter speed caused the waves to blur into a soft white line across the frame of the photograph.
The final photograph consists of a seascape full of layers of soft colors that repeat throughout the frame. The result is a photography that looks much like a watercolor painting, anchored by Whale Rock on the horizon.
