Chasing Storms and Sunflowers at Buttonwood Farm
Like many midsummer New England days, the forecast called for thunderstorms. Undeterred, I grabbed my camera and hit the road for Buttonwood Farm—home to some of the largest sunflower fields in New England. Late-day storms often bring dramatic skies, and few things make better fine art landscapes than a field of sunflowers beneath a sky full of energy.
A Sea of Gold in Bloom
Buttonwood Farm plants more than ten acres of sunflowers every summer. No matter how many times I visit, I always find something new. One moment I’m shooting sweeping landscape scenes, the next I’m focusing in tight for macro shots of a single sunflower. Time slips away out there—I get lost in the color, the light, and the quiet rhythm of the fields.
The Calm Before (and After) the Storm
That evening started like any other warm July night. But soon, the skies began to darken. Within minutes, the rain came down in sheets. I sprinted back to the car, watching as the field blurred into gray. For forty-five minutes, it poured. We almost gave up and headed home—until a sudden glimmer of light broke through the clouds.
In an instant, the storm began to fade. I jumped out, grabbed my gear, and ran to the edge of the field. The world felt electric—wet earth, golden petals, and a storm retreating toward the horizon.
One Fleeting Moment of Light
I set up quickly and switched to a wide-angle lens, hoping to capture both the vastness of the sunflower field and the turbulent sky above. I took only a few shots before the light changed again. The drama faded as fast as it came.
What stayed with me, though, were the flowers themselves—each one bowed, their faces tilted toward the ground as if hiding from the storm. It was raw and beautiful, a quiet moment of surrender after the chaos.
Bringing the Beauty Home
That evening reminded me why I love landscape photography—it’s about patience, persistence, and those rare moments when everything comes together.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this glimpse into my sunflower photography. You can view more of my fine art landscapes in my print galleries below
