The Stories, Lessons, and Craft Behind Each Photograph

Every photograph begins before the shutter is pressed.

It begins with waiting. With noticing. With the decision to explore something that caught your eye.

Behind the Print is a photo-story series that explores what happens before an image is made—and then the journey it goes on when it leaves the camear and eventually is printed and placed on a wall.

What Is Behind the Print?

Behind the Print is a collection of stories that accompany individual fine art photographs.

Each post pulls back the curtain on a single image, sharing:

  • The moment and mindset behind its creation
  • The lesson the photograph revealed over time
  • The craft and technical choices involved
  • A simple way of seeing you can carry into your own photography

Some images are quiet. Some take patience. Others require restraint.

All of them have a story worth slowing down for.

Why This Series Exists

This series grew out of Hope—a photo-story project created during a year of spinal cord surgery recovery. I spent months simply reviewing my images on my iPad, eventually writing the stories behind the images. Eventually, I moved from the bedroom across the hall to my office. My Epson printed was deep cleaned and I began the process of printing hundreds of those images.

During those days, somewhere in the back of my mind the idea for this series was born. A print is so much more than ink on paper, more than binary 1s and 0s on a hard drive, or in a cloud. These articles are my humble attempt to put words to all of these ideas.

Behind the Print exists to honor that process.

Not just the finished photograph—but the waiting, the choosing, and the stillness that made it possible.

What You’ll Find in Each Story

Every Behind the Print article follows a similar rhythm:

  • The Story — what was happening when the image was made
  • The Reflection — what the photograph taught me over time
  • The Craft — how the image came together technically
  • The How-To — a small, practical way to practice this approach yourself
  • The Print — the finished photograph, available as a fine art print
  • The Collection — related images that continue the visual story

These posts are not about chasing perfection or gear for gear’s sake.
They’re about intention, patience, and learning to see what’s already there.

From Camera to Wall

Each photograph featured in this series is printed with care and longevity in mind.

These are images created to live in real spaces—homes, offices, hospitals, and places where calm matters.

If a photograph resonates with you, you’re welcome to step closer.
If a story feels familiar, you’re not alone.

Begin Behind the Print

The first Behind the Print story explores patience and waiting—and how staying long after others left made a photograph possible that otherwise never would have existed.
