New Coast, Same Curiosity: Why We’re Heading to Florida

Family and friends,

I’m both excited and a little sad to share that Mike Dooley Photography is heading south to Florida.

Don’t get me wrong, Rhode Island is and always will be home. But the past few years have been tough on Roni and me: physically, mentally and emotionally. Probably ten other “-lys” we haven’t even discovered yet.

We need a reset. A fresh start.

We’ve been talking with my Mom and Dad, who live in Venice, Florida, about this for the last 18 months or so. Neither of us has bounced back as fast as we’d hoped, and it turns out that packing up and emptying a home of 28 years is a LOT of work!

So here’s where things stand. The house is under contract. We’re going to spend some time with Mom and Dad (we’re so blessed to have that opportunity) while we look for our new home. Our only rule is that it has to be single-floor living, start to finish.

Mom and Dad have lived in the area for more than 15 years, so we’ve made plenty of trips down and already love it there. That part’s easy.

As a photographer? As a guy who loves the water? Let’s just say I’m really excited. I can’t wait to kick off my shoes, throw my gear over my shoulder and walk the sand.

Over the last four years of my injury and recovery, I’ve looked at a LOT of images. And you know what? The more I looked, the more I thought about the images I’ve made, and the ones I still want to make. I couldn’t be more excited about Gulf Coast sunsets on some of the nicest beaches in the world.

A Quick Business Note

While we’re in transition, I’m putting a few things on pause. Print orders are suspended for now. I do have a few prints on hand that I’ll be selling before we go. Keep an eye on my Facebook page for those.

The same goes for in-person presentations, lessons and workshops. Once we’re settled in, I’ll figure out what those look like from the Gulf Coast, and I’ll let you know.

In the meantime, I didn’t want to just go quiet. I’ve been working on free, self-paced photography lessons that will be appearing right here on the site soon. It’s the kind of thing that travels well in a moving truck. Stay tuned!

Thank You

I want to take a moment to say a huge thank you to all of you. I couldn’t begin to name everyone, but so many of you have had a huge impact on me, and I can’t thank you enough.

I’m not leaving my Rhode Island roots behind. I’ll be back, and I’ll always be bringing a camera!

Shoes off, camera on.
Mike
