Architectural Photography at The Breakers Mansion in Newport
Spent an afternoon in Newport, Rhode Island, photographing The Breakers — probably one of the most recognizable homes in the state. It’s a 70-room mansion on 13-plus acres, looking straight out over the Atlantic.
Getting there later in the day meant warm, golden side light, which did a lot of work revealing the shape and texture of the architecture. The mansion was built between 1893 and 1895 for around $12 million — and as impressive as the outside is, the inside is supposedly even more so. Photography isn’t allowed indoors, even on the public tours, which is a shame — I’d love to spend a day in there with a camera, working the grand rooms down to the detail in the moldings.
For now, the outside will have to do.
