Every summer I make the trip out to a local farm for the Sunflower Festival to photograph the fields. It’s always a good time – giant fields of sunflowers at sunset, single flowers against a blue sky, the occasional bumble bee doing its thing.
Walking through one particular field, I noticed something odd. Hundreds, maybe thousands of sunflowers, and every single one of them faced away from me, toward the sun – except one. That one flower had turned the other way and was looking right back at me.
That’s the one that stopped me in my tracks. The flower doing its own thing while everything around it faced the same direction. I couldn’t help but think of Sinatra’s “I Did It My Way” while I set up the shot, so that’s what I called it.
Hope you like this one as much as I do. Sometimes the photo that gets you isn’t the big dramatic field – it’s the one flower that’s different from everything around it.
