Stars still out, the whole coast holding its breath, and the sun nowhere close.
As I stand in the dark along the Rhode Island coast, I eagerly await the rising sun. Each morning is different—unpredictable, unrepeatable. And that’s what I love most. The sounds of the surf, the clinking of small rocks shifting with the tide, the scent of clean salt air, the gentle breeze against my skin—these are the things I wish I could bottle up and keep forever.
Since I can’t do that, I do the next best thing: I capture the moment in a photograph.
This was the very first image I took that day, about 45 minutes before the sun crested the horizon. If you look closely, you’ll see stars still twinkling in the deep blue sky.
I hope this sunrise brings you a bit of peace and joy. And if it does—share it. Pass along that little moment of beauty.
The takeaway: Some of the best photographs happen before the show even starts, in the quiet, unremarkable minutes everyone else is still asleep for.
This deep blue, star-flecked pre-dawn scene from Black Point in Narragansett captures a stillness most people never see. A quietly beautiful piece for anyone who loves that in-between hour on the coast. See the print options.
