There’s something about the Providence skyline at dusk. The colors, the city lights starting to flicker on as the sky fades – it changes the whole feel of the city.
Prospect Park sits up on College Hill and is a popular spot for watching the sun go down at the end of the day. Some nights the sunset is spectacular, some nights it’s pretty ordinary. This wasn’t a spectacular one, but there was a nice magenta glow in the sky that reflected off the buildings in a way I liked, so I set up and got to work.
Dusk is one of my favorite times to shoot. Right after the sun sets, there’s a stretch of soft, even light left in the sky before it gives way to full dark, and it does nice things for a city skyline.
The composition took some work. I wanted to play with the contrasts in the scene – the trees in the foreground against the buildings on the horizon, the old church steeple in front of the newer high-rises, the soft sky against the hard edges of the city.
Providence is a beautiful city, and I never get tired of exploring it with a camera. You can see this print, Providence Skyline at Twilight, in the shop.
