Question 5 of 18 · Chapter 1: What am I buying?
It depends on which print you buy. My Signature Series are printed by me at home on an Epson P800. My Open Edition paper and metal prints are made by a print house I work with, Blazing Editions. Either way, I check how the photograph looks before it is printed.
Signature Series: made by me
I print these on my Epson P800. I choose the paper for each photograph, and each print uses premium paper from some of the finest paper companies in the world. I hand sign them and include a print of the story behind the photograph. I make one to five artist’s proofs of each image, sometimes on a different paper or with different settings, to be sure I am getting exactly what I want. I keep them, give some away as gifts, and use them for displays.
Open Edition: made by a print house
The Open Edition paper and metal prints are made with Blazing Editions. Their site explains their process in detail on their printing technology page. In plain terms, paper prints use archival pigment inks on acid-free archival paper. Metal prints are printed on a transfer paper first, then heat and pressure move the image into a coating on the aluminum.
What I do on my end
I calibrate my monitors regularly, and I print my images at home to spot check how they will look on paper. That way, what you receive is not a surprise to me either.
Where to go next
The paper and metal pages cover what each is like to live with: Is a paper print right for me? and Is a metal print right for me?
