This photo almost didn’t happen.
I was on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, photographing a glorious sunset at the Bodie Island Lighthouse. Once the sun dropped, I packed up and started the quiet, slightly creepy walk back to my car in an empty parking lot. Then I glanced back at the lighthouse in the pitch-black night, and it called to me like, well, a beacon.
So I turned around, unpacked my gear, and made this image well after dark. I’d hoped for a sky full of stars, but a high layer of clouds kept most of them hidden. It wasn’t the shot I had planned, but sometimes the unplanned ones are the real keepers.
