The Story Behind “Race Point: Waiting for the Light”

We hiked out to Race Point Lighthouse well before sunrise. About halfway across the dunes, the Milky Way stopped us cold, so we set up right there instead xE2x80x94 the Coast Guard station lit up below it. While we stood there we heard what we were told was whale song, carrying up from the dark water. I can’t swear to it myself, but that’s the story I was given, and it’s the one I’m sticking with.

We picked the hike back up afterward and made it to the lighthouse in time for sunrise after all. This is that photograph xE2x80x94 a long walk in the dark, a detour for the stars, and the light finally showing up right when we needed it.
