One evening in Newport, I had a plan: photograph the Goat Island Lighthouse with the Newport Bridge arching behind it and a sunset sky catching fire. But the light was flat, the scene underwhelming, and no matter how I composed it, the magic wasn’t there.
That’s when the doubt crept in. Why isn’t this working? Am I losing my eye? I try not to silence that voice. I listen. And this time it was whispering: look around. So I stepped back, and just outside my original frame was a small sailboat gliding quietly across the harbor.
I reframed. The lighthouse didn’t disappear, it just shifted from star to supporting role, and that sailboat became the soul of the image. Doubt didn’t derail me that evening. It redirected me.
