Photographs from the 2012 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk
On October 21, 2012, I had the chance to do some photography while helping out a good cause at the same time. A friend asked if I’d be willing to shoot a local charity event, and once I heard what it was, there was no way I was saying no.
The event was the American Cancer Society’s annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at Roger Williams Park in Providence, Rhode Island. It’s a 3-mile walk that starts and ends at the Temple of Music. That year’s walk landed on a beautiful, sunny fall day, and the turnout was something else — the whole park was a sea of pink. Pink shirts, pink pants, pink socks, pink hats, as far as you could see. Over 15,000 walkers showed up, and together they raised more than $900,000 to fight breast cancer.
It was a genuinely emotional day. Survivors wore special pink sashes, and there were whole teams walking in memory of someone they’d lost. More than once I had to stop shooting for a second and just wipe my eyes.
