Do I need a frame or mat?

Question 10 of 18 · Chapter 2: Choosing

Paper prints need a frame, and I suggest a local framer who can help you pick the frame and mat. Metal prints arrive ready to hang, so there is nothing to buy. Frames and mats are never included with my prints. I prefer museum glass, which is UV protective and anti-glare.

Paper

A frame protects the print and finishes it off. A mat gives the artwork some breathing room and a classic look. I like a clean white mat with a simple black frame. To me it just looks right, and I have both metal and paper prints in a traditional black frame at home.

Metal

No frame needed. It arrives complete and ready to hang. With a framed print the frame contains the image. A metal print has no boundary like that, so I give it a little extra space on the wall.

Finding a framer

As soon as you finish ordering, look for a local framer who knows what they are doing and can help you with frame and mat choice. When I needed a 100+ year old family heirloom framed, I took it to Providence Picture Frame, a great local place to bring whatever you want framed.

Glass

I prefer museum glass. It is UV protective and anti-glare.
