Will the colors match my screen?

Question 11 of 18 · Chapter 2: Choosing

A little, sometimes. Screens vary in brightness, color and calibration, so a print will not match your screen exactly. I calibrate my monitors regularly and print at home to spot check, so it should be close. What a screen cannot show you is depth, and that is the part I most want you to see.

Why screens and prints differ

A screen makes its own light. A print only reflects the light in your room. Every screen is set up a little differently too, so even the same photograph looks different on your phone and your laptop.

What I do about it

I calibrate my monitors regularly, and I print my images at home to spot check print quality. That is how I know what a photograph will look like on paper.

How to judge color once you have it

  • Look at it under soft, neutral light
  • Do not judge color in direct sunlight or under heavy yellow lamps
  • Give it a few days in the room, and try it in a few spots

The thing a screen cannot show

It is depth. That is especially true of my near and far portrait land and seascapes. You have to see one in person. If color really matters to you, email me.
