What Do I Mean by Fine Art Photography?
People ask what makes a photograph “fine art.” For me it’s simple. It’s a photograph I made on purpose, not one I happened to get.
That starts before I pick up the camera, with noticing how the light settles on the water at dawn and deciding that’s what I want to show you.
What Is Fine Art Photography?
Fine art photography is about intent.
A snapshot shows what was there.
I’m trying to show how it felt to stand there.
- Light, shadow, and composition are tools.
- The feeling is the point.
- Every image starts with a choice: what do I want someone to feel?
The Process Behind the Feeling
The itch starts at home.
I get a pull to create. I check sunrise, tide charts, and location ideas.
I look at inspiring photos—mine, others, works from masters that move me. Google Earth helps me imagine what I might see.
When conditions align, I gear up and make the trek.
Sometimes it’s five minutes from home.
Sometimes it’s a four-hour drive and a three-hour hike.
Sometimes I capture the vision on the first try.
Sometimes not at all.
Even “failures” teach.
A new skill. A new observation.
A quiet morning witnessing the birth of a day.
Not every morning yields a wall-hanger.
And those mornings aren’t failures. Ever.
From Feeling to Image
The photo is the result of everything leading up to it.
The planning, the drive, the waiting around.
When the shutter clicks, I’ve got it. And then I get to show it to you.
