How Do You Fix a Photo That’s Too Dark?

Better… or Worse?

1. Pick a side of the triangle:

ISO Shutter Aperture -2-10+1+2 the meter
f/16 · 1/500 · ISO 100
f/11 · 1/500 · ISO 100
f/8 · 1/500 · ISO 100
f/5.6 · 1/500 · ISO 100
f/4 · 1/500 · ISO 100
f/16 · 1/500 · ISO 100
f/16 · 1/250 · ISO 100
f/16 · 1/125 · ISO 100
f/16 · 1/60 · ISO 100
f/16 · 1/30 · ISO 100
f/16 · 1/500 · ISO 100
f/16 · 1/500 · ISO 200
f/16 · 1/500 · ISO 400
f/16 · 1/500 · ISO 800
f/16 · 1/500 · ISO 1600
Too dark. Better… or worse? Give it more light.
Better! Still a bit dark. One more?
That’s it! Right on the 0. Nice.
Worse. Now it’s too bright. Go back one.
Way worse! Way too bright. Back it off.

2. Change it, one click at a time:

− Less light
+ More light
− Less light
+ More light
− Less light
+ More light
  • The photo is too dark and the meter says −2. It needs more light.
  • Pick one side of the triangle: aperture, shutter speed or ISO. Any of the three can do it.
  • Change it one click at a time and ask, like at the eye doctor: better… or worse?
  • When the meter lands on 0, that’s it. Go past it and the photo gets too bright.
