Newport, for me, is adventure and family. As a kid, my mom would pack us up in the station wagon and take us to Newport — a stop at Allie’s Donuts back when Allie’s was special.
That giant bridge. The pillars sticking up into the sky, towering over the trees. Crossing that bridge was adventure. It was exciting.
I remember more walking around the city, shopping, Bowen’s Wharf, and of course the Newport Creamery. Touring the mansions. Newport has its own vibe, its own mystique.
I’m still fascinated by that damn bridge. I photograph it over and over — sunrise and sunset, one side or the other, north of the bridge and south of the bridge.
The Newport Bridge
Officially the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge — everyone just calls it the Newport Bridge, or the Pell Bridge. I keep coming back to it because it never looks the same twice. Sunrise from one side, sunset from the other. North of the span, south of the span. Clear skies, dramatic skies. It’s the same bridge and it’s never the same photograph.

The Harbor
Newport isn’t just the bridge — it’s the water underneath it, too. Sailboats, the harbor, the whole reason people fall for this town in the first place.
Bowen’s Wharf & the City
This is where the family memories live — walking around downtown, shopping at Bowen’s Wharf, a stop at the Newport Creamery. I haven’t photographed this side of Newport properly yet, but it’s as much a part of the place as the bridge is.
The Mansions
Touring the mansions is one of those Newport things everybody does at least once. On the list for a future shoot.
Local Institutions
Allie’s Donuts, back when Allie’s was special. The Newport Creamery. Places that have been part of a Newport trip for as long as I can remember, station wagon included.
My Newport
Every place I photograph in Newport eventually leads back to that bridge — the same one that made crossing into this town feel like an adventure when I was a kid in the back of the station wagon. Some things don’t change. I’m still chasing that feeling, camera in hand.
