New Hampshire

For years, New Hampshire has been our long weekend escape. In the early 90s we camped at Russell Pond Campground: a tent, a few provisions, and a weekend spent floating in the water, with dinner, drinks, and a small fire after. It was awesome.

We drove the Kancamagus Highway back and forth, stopping at every stop along the way. Hiking to the waterfalls. Looking down from the tops of mountains. Dinner at the Muddy Moose, shopping at the outlet stores, time in North Conway and Lincoln.

As we got older the tent stayed in the basement and we started getting hotels and sleeping in beds. The accommodations changed over the years, but the experience was always one of relaxation and peace. If you get a chance to visit, do it. Covered bridges, waterfalls, and tons of wildlife, although wildlife has never been my goal. My best shot is a raccoon at the dumpster of one of the nicer condos we have stayed at.

The White Mountains

Sabbaday Falls

Sabbaday Falls is one of the waterfall stops along the Kancamagus Highway. Here are three prints from there: the falls in color, the falls in black and white, and the river just above them.

Franconia Notch

Franconia Notch State Park is where the mountains close in around you. This is the waterfall I photographed there.

Sculptured Rocks Natural Area

I went out to Sculptured Rocks Natural Area in Groton, New Hampshire expecting waterfalls, and found a dry riverbed instead. Wasn’t the shot I planned on, but I kept walking anyway and came across this heart-shaped impression worn into the granite, with a few stray autumn leaves caught inside it. Small thing, but it stopped me in my tracks.
