Seascape Photography of a Sailboat on Narragansett Bay
One of the greatest things about living in Rhode Island is the easy access I have to the water for my seascape photography. Narragansett Bay is the heart of Rhode Island, and has over 250 miles of shoreline, making it a popular destination for tourists and seascape photographers alike! There is just something magical about the sounds of the surf and the ocean breeze that draw me back time and time again.
Conanicut Island at the entrance to Narragansett Bay is a great location for seascape photography, and home to several of my favorite locations for photography. On a recent afternoon I traveled to Fort Wetherill on the island to try to find an interesting subject to photograph.
As I got out of the car, I happened to look over to see this beautiful sailboat coming up Narragansett Bay through the trees. Not wanting to miss an opportunity, I grabbed my camera and started running! Across the parking lot I flew, between the cars, by the waving security guard, down the path and out onto the beach!
Wait, did I say waving security guard? Yup! Didn’t even notice him, but he sure noticed me! I ran right by him and out to the waters edge, changed a few settings on my camera and got several photographs of the sailboat before it sailed up the bay and out of sight.
It turns out that the beach I ran out onto was being used as a set for the upcoming movie “Moonrise Kingdom”! Luckily they were not filming that day, and the security guard said I could stay and take some photographs as long as I promised not to touch any of the props that were set up. Featuring such Hollywood stars as Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Harvey Keitel, Jason Schwartzman, I am not sure whether I was lucky I missed them or not!
In either case it was a great day, and I was able to get the photograph of the sailboat that you see here!
