Seascape Photography at Dawn: Black Rock on Narragansett Bay
I love seascape photography, and living near to Narragansett Bay makes it very easy for me to indulge in my passion. The short trip to the coast allows me to be in place at the crack of dawn, well before the sun peeks up over the horizon. Each short trip in a new opportunity to create a new fine art print that I will hang on my office wall!
It is this magical hour before sunrise that I often create some of my favorite photographs. The colors in the sky are soft and gentle, and the longer exposures turn the clouds and waves into beautiful blurs of motion.
The other morning I headed down to Black Rock in Narragansett for a little seascape photography.I had scouted out the location in full daylight the afternoon before, so in the pitch black morning I had a good idea of where I wanted to be. After a short walk, I knew I was roughly in the spot for the composition I had in mind.
It was extremely dark, and getting the composition dialed in can be a bit difficult, but I have a trick that I learned a few years ago that makes the process faster and easier. I set my Aperture to f/8.0, and my ISO to 6400. Yes, the ISO that high seems crazy, but this allows me to take a 2 second exposure and evaluate the composition on the LCD right away. After a few adjustments, I have a composition that I want. I then simply set my ISO back to 100, and I know that my exposure needs to be 2 minutes.
I love the way the long exposure blurs the clouds in the sky! This is why I love seascape photography so much! I always smile as the sky starts to come to life, as the suns rays light up the clouds, and a few stars remain visible in the blue sky of dawn. It is the birth of a new dawn, full of potential and excitement!
I hope that you have enjoyed my photograph of Black Rock at Dawn! You can purchase a fine art print of this photo, as well as many others that I have created in my fine art print gallery!
