Win a Free Print!
As a photographer looking ahead to the next year, I always like to reflect on what I have accomplished in the past year. I review all of my photographs from the year and decide what worked, what didn’t, which are my favorite, and what I would like to do more of in the upcoming year. It really does help me to understand where I have been, and to help me understand where I would like to go with my photography in the upcoming year!
I am really excited about the upcoming year, there is already several exciting things coming up that I cannot wait to share with you! Keep checking back, as I will be making two very big announcements! One will involve a press conference, so you don’t want to miss that!
So, what does any of this have to do with winning a free print? Well, I am glad you asked! I want YOU to pick which one of these photographs is your favorite and let me know in the comments. On Saturday, February 2, 2014 I will take the names of all the people that voted and put them in a hat and draw the name of one luck winner! That person will receive a FREE 8″x10″ print of the photo that they voted for. I will pay for the cost of the print, the mat, and the shipping! The only restriction is that you have to be in the United States.
My 5 Favorite Photographs of 2013 and Why I LOVE Them!
So without any further delay, here are my favorite 5 photographs from 2013, with a little bit of the reason why:
1 – Sunrise at Whale Rock
Whale Rock in Rhode Island is actually the smallest island in Narragansett Bay, and sits on the horizon in the photograph “Sunrise at Whale Rock”. This long exposure photo was taken from the beach, and with the blur of the water and the soft colors in the sky and reflected in the sand takes on the feel of a watercolor painting. It is the soft colors, and painterly feel that make this one of my favorite photographs of the year!
2 – Providence Highways at Night
I love the city of Providence at night, and I visit the city with my camera every chance that I get! What really drew me to this scene is all of the curves, and as I explored some different compositions I really fell in love with this one. What really sells me is the lights of the cars as the move through the curve of the highway on-ramp at the bottom of the frame! As the cars enter the highway on the left you see the while lights of the headlights as the head towards my camera, but then as they go through the turn you see the red taillights!
3 – Docked Boats Under Fall Colors
On a quiet Sunday afternoon, my wife and I loaded up the car, stopped for an ice coffee and headed out to see the fall colors in Rhode Island. I took a ton of photographs that day, as we followed RT 102 from one end of the state to the other! This ended up being my favorite fall photo, simply because of the scene. The fall colors, the boats and the small dock all just scream out “Rhode Island” to me! You can read more about this photograph in my article titled “Fall Photography in Rhode Island”
4 – Two Trees on a Hill
Each year I make the short drive to a local farm that plants acres and acres of sunflowers as part of their annual Sunflower Festival. The fields are gorgeous at sunset, and photographers come from all over New England to get a chance to photograph their beauty. Across the street is two trees, and I have photographed them many times. I love the trees in silhouette in this photo, it helps to lend a bit of mystery to the scene. I think of the trees as two lovers, holding hands on top of the hill watching a beautiful summer day come to an end. You can read the full story “Photographing Two Trees On A Hill”
5 – Newport Harbor at Dusk
Newport, Rhode Island is one of my favorite cities for photography. This artsy seaside community is full of great subjects, and the summer light can be beautiful. This photograph reminds me of what a beautiful summer night it was. Calm and quiet, I was also afforded the opportunity to make talk a little with the folks strolling through the small park, enjoying a beautiful night on the water. It also reminds me to keep an open mind – I had originally researched and planned to create a much different photograph that night, but Mother Nature gifted me with something much better instead. You can read about how I do my research and planning for many of my photography outings in the article “Seascape Photography at Newport Harbor”

I have to go with number 1. The image displays not only a sense of peace with the soft colors and soft water but power as the island rises from the softness.
Love the Newport scene!
i love #3 . the fall colors are gorgeous!
# 3 is my favorite, it reminds me of the fall colors in NE Ohio, oh how I miss them.
Howdy Mike – I think #5 Newport Harbor at Dusk is the best image and earns my vote. I have some comments about the others that I’ll tell you in private.
#3. Happy Holidays to you Mike
#2 is my favorite. I love the way the headlights and taillights travel throughout the photograph.
#2. The composition is complex and it keeps me looking at it for a long time.
#5. I’m always impressed with the challenge of getting a good shot under those lighting conditions.
#1 Sunrise at Whale Rock is just stunning!
I love “Newport Harbor at Dusk”. It was a tough choice as they are all wonderful (the fall colors are great too), but, since I live in Newport, I really appreciate that shot.
While these are all breath-taking, I have to vote on #1. So serene and beautiful!
Thanks everyone! I love to see the variety in everyone’s votes!

LOL Just noticed Teresa used the exact same words as I did to describe #1!
Number 1 is gorgeous, my absolute favorite! They are all spectacular though!
I love #1, Sunrise at Whale Rock. It has such a dreamy quality and I love the way the colors seem to melt into each other.
Docked Boats Under Fall Colors; sigh … I miss the maples of New England her in SC.
The Newport at Dusk is my favorite, though it was a hard choice. I also really loved #3.
Sunrise at Whale Rock. It is absolutely stunning.
As expressed by several others, I think these are all stnning-and I’m sure you are a superior judge of your own work. I vote for #5, because harbours are one of my favorite sights and the sky is heavenly.
Hi Mike, Choosing a favorite from theses 5 beautiful photos is tough! I like them all for different reasons. I ‘m going to go with #5 though because It’s uniquely RI, the colors are beautiful and it is so peaceful and serene. Great job Mike!
That is a hard decision, they are all fabulous. 1 and 3 are my favorites but if I can only pick one then I pick number 1. Wishing you a prosperous 2014 filled with love and laughter!
Newport Harbour
Absolutely Whale Rock. That print would look so good hanging in my house….. 😉
#5. The colors are incredible. The perspective almost lets the viewer feel as if they were present on that beach. I love the contrast of the green beacon light reflecting off the water.
I love Number 5 (touches my heart) …right down the street from me! To tell the truth they are all so beautiful
I like Newport Harbor at Dusk……but Sunrise at Whale Rock is a close runner up!
I love them all but providence and newport harbor ard my favorite.. nice work
# 5 is my favorite
Thank you everyone for all your kind words! It is great to get so much positive feedback!
They are all wonderful photographs. The Newport Harbor is my favorite. I moved away from RI many years ago and that shot just brings me right back! The color and detail is amazing. Were you on the bridge at Goat Island?
Hi Steve, thank you very much! I was actually at the north end of Storer Park – that is the little park on the right hand side of the road just before you go on to the bridge at Goat Island.
Number 1…….number 5 is a very close second! beautiful,
All beautiful!hard to pick a favorite, but I will go with #5 because it reminds me of the view of the Mt Hope Bridge from my childhood home.
Sunrise at Whale Rock is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It affected me deeply. Though I would love to own all of them, the unique quality of number one makes it my favorite!
I love #4. Very “mystical” and although it looks easy to have taken, it displays the skill of the photographer and the beauty of nature. A great mood piece!
really love #5
#1 fan followed by #5

#5 the true beauty of Newport! Absolutely amazing!
Definitely number 1 !!!!!! The colors in the whale rock picture are amazing…and “who knew” it was in R.I.!? Love it!
I love #5 – the bridge, lighthouse, and boats look so serene. I love the colors. All of your photos are nice but this one is my favorite.
#5 is beautiful. It shows the best of Newport.
They are all beautiful, #5 and #1 arrest my favorites!
It’s #5 for me. Reminds me of home…..beautiful shot
They’re ALL GREAT, Dooley! But of course, I’m a loyalist, and partial to what I love. So, it’s NEWPORT AT DUSK for me! Thank you very much for your effort. Your art is BEAUTIFUL! – Tom Timberlake
#5 everything Newpirt captured in one beautiful shirt! Stunning!
#5 is such a serene scene. The colors reflecting off the water and the lighthouse are just as beautiful as the shades in the sky. The lights off the bridge and the stillness of the water. Ah…it’s a scene I could look at for hours. Would love to have it on my wall at home so I could! 🙂
They’re all stunning, but selecting just one, I’d go with Newport Harbor. I’m from Portsmouth, Rhode Island, but have lived in Virginia for the past 17 years, and that picture grabs my heart – it’s home. Growing up, I spent many an hour sitting on pier #9 under the Mount Hope Bridge watching the sunset and thinking about life. Your picture brings back memories of relaxing after a long day of sailing, with the sunset bringing a wonderful day to a close. Looking at the picture, I can hear the lapping of the waves, the cries of the seagulls, and the gentle sounds of halyards against the mast. It’s home, and you captured it perfectly!!
Newport Harbor at Dusk, #5 is my favorite. Being from Tiverton and having lived in Newport for several years after college this reminds me of the essence of Rhode Island. The ocean, sailing and Newport Bridge all have a uniqueness in the Ocean State that is unmatched anywhere in the country.
No. 1, ‘Sunrise at Whale Rock’ is my favorite – and I would like your permission to paint it in oils, 16 x 20 probably. I served 2 1/2 years on the Coast Guard Buoy Tender Spar, homeported in Bristol RI at the time, servicing buoys from Watch Hill to the Cape Cod Canal, 1960-1962. After retiring from the CG, I returned to Aquidneck Island for 20 years, and only moved to VA because my entire family is in Hampton Roads.
Hi James! Yes, you may paint this photo and I would love to see how it comes out!
I like them all and it was hard to choose. I vote for “Docked boats under Fall colors.
Number 4 is my vote Mike. Peaceful and calming but in a powerful way
Thank you to everyone that commented and voted! This was a LOT of fun and I really enjoyed seeing not just what photograph you liked but WHY you liked them!
I will be closing the comments on this post now, and then I will be drawing the winner. I will post a new article with the winning information this afternoon.
