Portrait Photography and Emotion

An Afternoon of Portrait Photography

I am a huge lover of portrait photography! There is something very special, almost magical, about the powerful emotional connection that portrait photography creates. I recently had the opportunity to work with several models for a portfolio building session.

For those of you familiar with my photography, you know that the majority of my work is either landscape photography or still life photography. I love to get lost in the creation of my art, and both landscape and still life photography allow me to go off into another world.

Portrait photography is a collaborative effort between the model and the photographer. As a photographer I often have a vision for a photograph in my mind, and communicating that vision to your model is key to creating that portrait. Fortunately these lovely ladies knew what they were doing, and they made working with them a pleasure, one that i hope I get the opportunity to repeat again someday.

First of all, this was an amazing experience. Seven models, 3 different portrait studio setups, and I couldn’t guess how many clothing changes! By the end of the afternoon I had a memory card full of photographs that I was really excited about!

In the 2+ years that I have been an active Flickr user, I have “favorited ” 251 photographs. Portrait photography makes up almost have of that number! That actually surprised me, and caused a fair amount of introspection. If I consider myself a photographer of objects and not people, why am I so drawn to photographs of people?

I find that I am amazed by the emotion that can be conveyed in a portrait. So many things that a photograph can tell us, and I am finding myself looking at more and more photographs of people. Will this cause a change in what I shoot? Maybe, maybe not, only time will tell. However, whether I change what I shoot or not, I am pretty sure that this is going to change HOW I shoot. I think anytime that you stop and think about what you do and why, something good has happened. I hope that you enjoy viewing these photographs, as much as I have enjoyed making them.

You can see some more of my portraits in my portrait photography gallery!
