“Red Skies at Sakonnet Point Beach” is all about a memory
When creating a photograph, I often find that there is a connection to something personal in every photo that I create. Many times a scene will remind me of an event, or of a person and that memory will inspire what and how I create.
The evening that I created the seascape photograph titled “Red Skies at Sakonnet Point Beach” was inspired by a particularly strong memory of my grandfather. My grandfather was a lover of the sky – the clouds, the colors, all of it. I would often find him standing, hands in his pockets, whistling a song and watching the sky. We could be in the backyard, out on the golf course, or in the middle of the grocery store parking long. Morning, noon and night he had a fascination with the sky.
As I stood on the beach that evening the skies turned red, and I thought of my grandfather and knew in an instant that he would take one look at this sky and say “Red skies at night, sailors delight”. The saying goes back to his days fishing, and the belief that a red sky at night meant that the next day would be a good day to be out on the water.
Thinking about my grandfather. I created this photograph of the red sky as the sun sank below the horizon, ending a beautiful fall day in Rhode Island.
