A Sunflower Stands Apart in a Giant Field of Sunflowers
Every summer I make the trip out to a local farm for the annual Sunflower Festival and to photograph the fields of sunflowers. This is a great opportunity for me to create a bunch of photographs of the giant sunflowers in a whole variety of ways – giant fields of sunflowers at sunset, individual flowers framed by a blue sky, and macro photographs of bumble bees working away gathering pollen.
As I strolled through the fields of sunflowers, I could not help but stop and notice that of all the sunflowers in one particular field one sunflower stood out. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of flowers in this one field all faced away from me and into the sun; except for one sunflower. In this giant field of sunflowers, one sunflower faced away from the sun and was looking back at me.
It was this one sunflower that caused me to stop and take notice. The sunflower that was different, the sunflower that chose to do its own thing. In my mind, the sunflower was screaming out “Look at me, I am different!”. I simply had to create a photograph of this flower!
As I took photographs of this unique sunflower I could not help but hear Frank Sinatra’s classic song “I Did It My Way” run through my head. I hope that you enjoy this lone flower, the sunflower that stands apart in a giant field of sunflowers!
