Light Painting and Night Photography at Worden Pond
On a recent Saturday night I traveled to Worden Pond in Wakefield, Rhode Island to try my hand at light painting and night photography. It was the weekend of the Perseid Meteor Shower, and the forecasts were calling for perfect conditions for photographing the night sky! So at 10:30 that night I packed up my gear and headed out!
Due to my work schedule, I was not going to be able to get out during the peak of the meteor shower, but I had hopes that there would be enough activity in the sky to make it worth my while. At a minimum I knew that even if I did not get a photograph of a meteor that I would be able to get some shots of the stars in the night sky, and it sure did not disappoint!

The night was absolutely gorgeous! There was not a cloud in the sky, and the relatively low humidity levels for an August night gave me a crystal clear view of all the stars in the night sky! I did see a few meteors, and was able to capture one in the upper edge of the photograph in this post. I composed the photograph to include Worden Pond in order to give a sense of location.
In order to help bring some depth to the landscape, I used my flashlight to light paint the trees on the waters edge. It does not add much in the way of light to the image, however I find it makes a huge difference! There is no exact science to light painting, you just have to try it out and see what works and what doesn’t.
I spent most of the night photographing the stars over Worden Pond, and it was just after 5 AM when I finally packed up my camera and headed home for some much needed sleep! I am looking forward to my next trip out to photograph the night sky and have a whole package of batteries for the flashlight ready for some more light painting!
