A Photograph of St Mary’s Cathedral of the Assumption in Fall River
I recently had the opportunity to photograph at Saint Mary’s Cathedral of the Assumption in Fall River, Massachusetts. St Mary’s is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fall River, and where the Bishop of the Diocese has his chair.
The cathedral itself is an amazing place. Construction of the cathedral started in 1852 and completed 3 years later in 1855. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Full of vibrant colors and intricate details, it is a masterpiece in architecture. There were many times I found myself walking away from my camera and tripod to marvel at something new my eye had discovered.
I spent three hours inside photographing everything my eye could see. From grand scenes that captured the massive size of the structure, to intimate scenes that captured the little details, I was at no loss of subjects to photograph. I can safely say that I would have stayed and photographed St Mary’s Cathedral all weekend if they had let me!
What amazes me about the cathedral, as well as many of the other historic churches and buildings is the craftsmanship. It is not often that we see structures like this, and photographing them makes me feel as if I am capturing a small piece of history that is slowly disappearing.
The photograph that you see here is one of my favorites from the shoot. Taken from high up in the choir loft at the back of the cathedral, I felt it captured so much of both worlds. The grand size of the structure, yet it is full of intricate details in the arches and columns. I found that the warm tones from all of the wood create a welcome and inviting feeling.
My deepest gratitude to the staff at St Mary’s Cathedral for opening their amazing church for me to photograph!

Would any of your photographs taken at Saint Mary’s Cathedral of the Assumption in Fall River, Massachusetts contain the names of donors of the stained glass windows? I’m asking because our family story is that our great aunt Nellie Melia & her husband Edward Melia dedicated/purchased a stained glass windows in memory of their twin daughters who died. St. Mary’s appears to be the closest church to her last known address. Hope you can help!
