A Photography Excursion Along the Charles River in the City of Boston
Boston is the largest city in New England, and a great place to spend the some time working on photography. Full of tall skyscrapers, great architecture, wonderful parks and the famous Charles River, there is no shortage of subjects to photograph.
The other day my mother in law was having some minor surgery in Boston, and while I have been into the city many times to catch a Red Sox or Bruins game, I have never really explored the city for photography. From the waiting room up on the sixth floor we had a breathtaking view of Boston, and it only took a glance to realize that we were only a short walk away from the famous Charles River!
I headed off to explore the city, with the intention of getting lots of photographs of the tall buildings, the gritty city life and so many other scenes that come to mind when you think of a big city. One of my favorite finds was the entrance to a parking garage. From the street the red of the brick walls caught my eye, and I hustled through the door to check it out. I probably only took about 2 steps through the door before seeing this scene. I did not have my tripod with me, so I had to handhold the 3 shot bracket used to make the HDR photograph, but I am pleased with how it came out. The RAW photographs were processed in Lightroom, then Photomatix was used to create the HDR photograph. It was then brought into Photoshop to do a little bit of cleanup and some color correction.
After exploring the streets of the city for a bit, I decided to check out the park along the Charles River. I was truly overwhelmed with how beautiful this park in the middle of the city was. Trees, water, nature, complete peace and quiet! It was such a contrast to what I had experienced just on the other side of the street! That contrast became my theme for my photography excursion.
I tried to find and create photographs of scenes that had a strong contrast with the city. From my side of the Charles River if I looked in the direction of the city, I could only see the giant tress and shrubbery blocking out all of the sights and sounds. Storrow Drive was there, I could see it with Google Maps on my smart phone, but I was oblivious to its existence.
As I explored the path along the Charles River, I came across this little footbridge and was amazed at what I saw on the other side. It was as if that little bridge was a tunnel to another world, miles away from where I stood. I could see the blur of the cars flying by, hear the engines and the honks of many horns. I lined up my shot and waited for the right moment in time. The photograph below is one of my very favorites of the trip.
It was a great day for photography in Boston, and I came home with a new appreciation for the beauty of the city and a memory card full of photographs of my adventure
