Sunset Sunflower Photography in Southern New England
In New England there are a handful of events that are simply can’t miss for fine art landscape photography. One such event is The Sunflower Festival! Since 2004 Buttonwood Farm in Griswold, CT has hosted their annual Sunflowers For Wishes fundraisers for Make-A-Wish Foundation of Connecticut.
Just a short 45 minute ride from where I live in Rhode Island, I try to make the trip down to the sunflower fields at least a few times during the week of the festival. When I say a sunflower festival, I am not talking about a few sunflowers planted in some little garden. I am talking about thousands of sunflowers! Acres and acres of them! The folks at Buttonwood Farm plant anywhere from 10-14 acres of giant sunflowers. To say that it is a breathtaking sight is an understatement!
One of the nice things about the sunflower fields is the variety of photography that I get to do. The sunflowers draw a number of insects to them, allowing some great opportunity for macro photography, while individual flowers can be isolated and photographed as well. However, at the end of the day I love to do some landscape photography at sunset! The warm, golden light of sunset turns the yellow petals of the flowers a magical color.
Once the sun goes down, there is no reason to put the camera away, as the sunflower fields make an amazing subject for night photography. The soft illumination of the newly risen moon give a unique look to the fields, creating photographs that have a very calm and relaxing feel to them!
After spending several hours exploring the fields and creating photographs, it is always a delight to get some of Buttonwood Farms homemade ice cream in a freshly made waffle cone! Some of the very best ice cream in New England! How can you go wrong????

Thanks Donna! I had just packed it in for the night and started back to the car when I saw the moon in the sky! I knew that I had to unpack and get a shot or two!
