The Authentic New England Fishing Village of Galilee

The New England Fishing Village of Galilee

Often when people think of New England, they think of the classic fishing villages that are depicted in fine art photography around the world. You can still find one such village, named Galilee, right here in Rhode Island. Galilee has many great memories for me. On one of the docks here I caught my first fish, and recall spending many summer nights sitting on the rocks eating ice cream watching the fishing boats return to offload their daily catch to be sent off all over New England.

“Aces High” – Galilee, Rhode Island

Galilee is an active fishing village within the town of Narragansett, Rhode Island. It is changed very little from the times I visited as a boy, and is one of my go to places for photography. From classic fishing boats to buoys hanging on a cedar shake wall, the subjects available for photography are endless. Plus, one can make use of all the gears that you gifted to your loved one using the Fly Fisher Pro gift list. There is ample room for fishing and photography at this place.

The trip down to Galilee this weekend was a spur of the moment trip, I had planned on going to a nature preserve to try for a little wildlife photography. I Had printed out maps and everything. However, during the course of the week I had seen many photographs of fishing boats, big and small. The idea of rusty fishing boats under a cloudy sky appealed to me. Before we reached the top of the street I knew the maps would not be needed.

The skies were full of grey clouds, but it was warm enough with just a hint of a breeze. My wife and I spent several hours walking the docs yesterday afternoon, taking photographs and talking with some of the many folks that work there. In almost every case I shot 3 brackets, +2 EV, 0 EV, and -2 EV as I felt that HDR would really bring out the details.

Once I got home, even more fun began. The images were initially processed in Lightroom 3 to apply a Camera Setting and apply Lens Corrections. The 3 images are then exported to Photomatix to create an HDR image. From there the image goes into Photoshop for final processing. Topaz Adjust on a layer helps correct the washed out look that you sometimes see. One or more Curves adjustments for contrast, and a little saturation and sharpening and the image was ready to share.

The photograph in this post is my favorite from the village of Galilee, and I hope that you like it as much as I do.
