Photographing the Crescent Moon During Blue Hour
So often my family, friends and yes, even other photographers will call me crazy for the early hours I keep in the name of photography. Why do I get up so early they ask? I say it is for the light, for the colors, for the ability to create my art, and for the joy of witnessing one of natures greatest displays of beauty. As a photographer, capturing this beauty is what it is all about.
Photographs created during blue hour are unmistakable in their beauty, and there is no better place to create them then along the coast of the Ocean State! Rocky Point is an abandoned amusement park along the coast in Warwick, and is only a few minutes from my home. It is a location that is featured repeatedly in my art work.
So what exactly is “blue hour”, and why is it so special?. It all starts with sunrise, that magical moment when the sun crosses the horizon and a new day is born. A fresh start, a clean slate, a new opportunity. For one very special hour before that moment, the light is magical. The sky fills with rich colors, as the light bounces of the bottoms of the clouds and illuminates our surroundings. To me, this hour is the best time of day to be a photographer, and when I like to create my photographs.
I often explore the beaches along the east coast of Narragansett Bay searching for my next composition. Rocky Point provides a number of opportunities, and the old pier is top on the list. For this composition I decided to go extremely wide and create a photograph that suggests the vastness of the ocean and sky. “Under the Crescent Moon’ is the latest addition to the photographs for sale in my fine art print galleries
